Gerrard's amazing free-kick against Villa was deemed worthy of Sportscenter today. Of course, they had to make a comment like, "I think he bent it a little like Beckham, don't you think?' But nevertheless, it's Steven Gerrard. On ESPN.
Is it too optimistic to believe that soccer is finally on the American Media's radar? As a skeptic, my first thought was 'slow news day.' But with MLB heading toward playoffs and the NFL pre-season underdway, ESPN has no shortage of big 3 coverage.
I'm also impressed that they had the brains to show Gerrard's free-kick. While beautiful, it was a more subtle depiction of skill than Obafemi Martin's dramatic overhead kick for Newcastle earlier in the day. Such acrobatics, along with those included in his goal celebration, are usually the type of football highlights that make it onto American television. Kudos to ESPN.
